Upwork fees in 2026: what they take, what you keep.

Upwork replaced its old flat fee with a variable 0–15% service fee in May 2025 — set per contract, at proposal. Add withdrawal and FX and a full Upwork route into Ghana, Nigeria or Kenya costs roughly 8–18% all-in. Every number on this page is a range from published fee schedules, verified October 2026 — not a quote.

How the new fee works: when you submit a proposal, the contract states your service fee — anywhere from 0% to 15%. Clients with long, well-rated working histories land at the low end; newer accounts pay more. The fee is visible to both you and the client on the contract. Withdrawal and FX charges are separate and happen when money leaves the platform.

What you can control.

You cannot renegotiate Upwork's service fee mid-contract — it is set at proposal. What you can control is everything after the money leaves the platform: which withdrawal rail you use, how often you withdraw (flat fees multiply), and the FX spread you accept.

That is why this site's fee leakage calculator splits the cost into stages. Stage 1 is same clients, better payout rail — pure fee recovery, no client risk. Stage 2 is direct billing, where the commission disappears entirely because the client is new or already off-platform.

On typical Ghana corridors, Stage 1 recovers a few hundred dollars a year; Stage 2 recovers a few thousand. Run your own monthly number through the calculator — it uses worst-case ranges on purpose, so you plan against the high end.

The terms-of-service line.

There is a clean way to get direct clients and a dirty way. The dirty way — moving your existing platform clients off Upwork in a way that circumvents its rules — is how accounts get suspended. The clean way: outreach to new clients, and conversations with clients who have already left the platform on their own.

The Dollar Client Kit's outreach scripts stay on the clean side: they target new direct clients and past clients who no longer use the platform. Your account, your call — but the scripts will never ask you to break platform terms.

Questions.

How much does Upwork charge freelancers in 2026?

Upwork fees for freelancers in 2026: 0–15% service fee, set per contract at proposal since May 2025. Add withdrawal and FX and a full route into Ghana costs roughly 8–18% all-in (worst case), about 8–13% for established accounts. Verified October 2026.

Did Upwork change its fees in 2025?

Yes. The old flat structure was replaced in May 2025 by the variable 0–15% rate, agreed per contract. Your rate is visible to you and the client before the contract starts.

Is it against Upwork terms to get direct clients?

Building relationships with new clients outside the platform is normal business. Moving existing platform clients off-platform in a way that circumvents Upwork's terms is not. The kit's scripts target new clients and clients who already left.

How much does Upwork take from your earnings?

Counting service fee (0–15% since May 2025) plus withdrawal and FX, an Upwork route into Ghana loses roughly 8–18% all-in (worst case) — about 8–13% for established accounts. The free calculator on this site shows your corridor as a range, never a fake-precise number.
